Indoors or outdoors, your cat is on the prowl.

Orange County kitties are much like their cousins anywhere else in that they love to play and hunt. For some owners this may be a welcomed activity, but with others the constant gift of dead animals can be a bit much. Even a vet will tell you that whether little Sylvester is an indoor or outdoor cat prowling is normal.

If you have a pest problem and you don’t mind throwing away your ‘gifts’ then this is all well and good. If you do not then your kitty’s prowling activities may cause you some disruptions. Since you cannot change nature perhaps you can adapt so that Fluffy fills their needs while you do not get those unwanted extras that go with.

First of all, try getting them some toys that they can hunt. While battery operated toys that move around on their own are great some just don’t have those kinds of funds. Try taking their toys and hiding them in little hidey holes. Get a cat tower with all kinds of places to sit and squeeze in.

If your cat is an outdoor cat try making them a cat garden. Make sure that there are plants, grassy areas, shade, sunny spots, mystery areas, water, and some sandy areas to play in. Give them areas to climb while making sure that the area is safe. Include some fragrant plants, but be sure that they are safe for your cat to chew on since they will be doing so.

Playing with your cat will also reduce their need to prowl, and so will neutering or spaying. Getting them a playmate could be helpful if you can afford it. Like all animals Orange County felines love to play so any of these options are good.

Eating certain kinds of animals can cause your cat to get worms, and handling them can be icky. For any other ideas on how to focus their prowling try asking their veterinarian.
