Should your cat roam free?

Free-roaming cats, sometimes referred to as feral cats that are allowed to roam freely outdoors typically have a shorter lifespan than those that are indoor cats. They tend to have more harm caused to them and face more veterinary visits. Plus, they are usually more susceptible to diseases.

Cats that are let outside unsupervised are defenseless to the elements on the outside. Parasites, diseases, cars, and other animals such as dogs and even coyotes found around the Orange County area pose problems.

FIV (feline AIDS), Feline leukemia, distemper, rabies, and heartworms are just a few of the diseases that could affect your loving pet. Several of these diseases are hard to detect and others are impossible to even test for. Many of the diseases have no vaccines and are untreatable.

On occasion cats can become a nuisance to many in the neighborhood. They will dig in your gardens trying to make a litter box. Some kitties like to dig in the trash. Many times cats will get on your automobiles especially when it is cold outside and you have recently driven your car looking for warmth.

Cats can have a healthy, long life kept indoors. Cats should be let outdoors but with supervision on a cat leash with a harness. A great alternative would also be a sunroom or atrium with plenty of sunlight and scenery. Another idea is an enclosed cat garden.
