Perhaps you have decided to breed your birds, and now you are wondering how to do that. Do you let the bird build its own nest? Do you get one of those premade boxes or nests? Perhaps you need to do a combination of the two? Well, have no fear your answers are here!
Each bird is unique in the way that they do things. The best idea is to research your particular breed and go from there. Of course, another option is to discuss the matter with professionals who know more about birds and their habits.
Once you decide upon a nesting option find a way to connect it to the living habitat area. For instance, if you choose the box then you would connect it to the side door of the cage with the side door up so that the bird could have access. If you do use a box be sure to leave pine shavings so that the eggs won’t roll around.

If you decide to give them things to build their own nest, connect a separate cage to the side door with twigs, untreated grass clippings, tree leaves, and hair so that they can create their own. Avoid using dryer lint, or any chemically treated items so that your birds won’t get sick.
Once your bird has laid their eggs avoid bothering the nest too much. A quick peek once a day should suffice in quenching that natural curiosity. Also remember that there are some states that require that a bird be banded a few days after hatching. Make sure to consult your veterinarian and do some research so that you will know if this needs to be done with your hatchlings.
Check with your veterinarian about whether it will be necessary to separate the male from the mother and the hatchlings as it is based on the type of bird. Good luck and happy breeding!
