Animals need checkups too

In Orange County, just like the rest of the world, pets need regular checkups the same way that their human counterparts do. It is recommended that your pet visit their veterinarian at least once a year for a wellness check. At these checkups your pet’s doctor can catch problems which will help your pet while possibly saving you money in the future.

There are several things that will happen at a pet checkup. First, the vet will ask a number of questions such as:

  1. What has your pet been eating?
  2. How has your pet been keeping hydrated?
  3. Have you noticed any breathing problems?
  4. How often do they have bowel movements or urinate?
  5. Do you have any concerns about your pet’s health? If so, why?

After the questions your pet’s doctor will begin the examination. The examination will vary depending on species. It is likely that they will visually inspect your pet, auscultate, and then palpate. Auscultate is where they listen to the heart and lungs for defects or problems. Palpate is where they check the pulse, various lymph nodes, the legs, and the abdomen. In addition, they will check their eyes, ears, skin, and coat.

Besides bringing your pet your veterinarian may ask you to bring a fresh sample of your pet’s feces. This is so that it can be checked to see if there are any parasite eggs. Your pet will also likely receive any shots, pills, or other medications so that your pet can remain healthy. If you are having a problem with fleas or ticks remember to mention it to the doctor.

Depending on your pet, and their environment, it may be necessary for their doctor to see them more often. After all, some animals age differently, and environmental conditions such as weather may require your pet to get more attention. Remember Orange County pet owners, pet owners everywhere, take care of your pet with wellness visits.
