URGENT RECALL NOTICE
Stella & Chewy’s has recalled a lot of dog food due to the detection of a bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes. The affected lot is Chewy’s Chicken Freeze-Dried Dinner Patties for Dogs, 15 oz. bags (Lot # 111-15). They recalled other products as well due to “an abundance of caution”.
Listeria is a dangerous pathogen to human and dogs. It can cause severe symptoms, especially for people and pets with compromised immune systems (but healthy people and pets can get sick too). Symptoms can include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, miscarriages, and stillbirths. if you have been using this diet and you or your pet are experiencing any of the listed symptoms call your physician or veterinarian immediately.
There is still some controversy with whether the high pressure processing of so-called “raw” diets is safe, since there is risk of post-processing contamination (which is what the company is investigating now). Our veterinarians at the OC Veterinary Medical Center feel that for the average pet, raw diets or diets that undergo high pressure processing are considered less safe and unnecessary for the average pet (we do have some patients with severe food issues where these diets are warranted). If you wish to feed one of these diets-we recommend caution, especially if young children or immune compromised individuals are at home.
