Cats are not the only groomers around

Although cats are very fastidious creatures they still need a little help from you. Cats who are not groomed can end up with matted hair, ingrown nails, and more. Even the kittens of Orange County could use some grooming and bathing from time to time.

You might scratch your head and wonder “What about cats being afraid of water?” Truth is most cats are okay with water. Especially those bathed and groomed regularly from a young age. You can brush, bathe, and even clip the nails of your cat. Your veterinarian can help you determine the frequency and type of grooming.

For short-haired cats being brushed once a week is enough. Comb them from head to tail, and then brush them for 5 to 15 minutes. Make certain you are gentle around their privates, stomach, and with female cats be careful around their nipples. Long-haired cats need a daily brushing. Comb the hair on their legs and stomach area, and follow up by brushing for 5 to 15 minutes.

Bathing only really needs to be done if your cat’s coat is greasy, oily, sticky, or smelly. If you decide to bathe your precious ‘putty tat’ then doing it after a brushing is the best idea. Make sure your cat feels secure standing in the tub or sink filled with 3 or 4 inches of water. Next, wet your kitty completely taking care not to get water in their eyes and ears. Then, rub in the soap starting with their head and working down to their tail. Finally, rinse them off (still avoiding the eyes and ears), and dry thoroughly.

Much like when trimming a dog’s nails start by making sure to get kitty used to having their feet handled. Using pet nail trimmers apply pressure to their pad, and then cut off the white tip. Take care not to cut too close to the quick of the nail.

Whether you are in Orange County or elsewhere in the world be sure to talk to your veterinarian before settling on a grooming regimen. A groomed kitty is a happy kitty. Good luck and happy grooming!
