Cages and perches for those picky birds.

Even Orange County birds need cages and perches to make their home extra comfortable and special. Their veterinarian can recommend the proper size cages and perches. Keep in mind though that your little Tweety requires various sizes of perches to exercise their feet.

The cage will need to be the right size and the bars correctly spaced to prevent escape or injury in trying to escape. Cages for large or medium species should be about one and a half times the adult bird’s wingspan in height, width, and depth. This is so that the bird has room to move without getting damaged. Smaller birds should have a cage that allows them to flitter about.

For small bird species the bars should be spaced no more than half an inch. Medium bird species should have bars spaced between half an inch to three-quarters of an inch. Of course the spacing for large birds should be about three-quarters to one and a quarter inch.

There are wood, mineral, and plastic perches available in various sizes. Although plastic perches are not a good option since they can hurt the bird’s feet. Wood perches will be chewed on by birds which means they will need to be replaced on occasion. Mineral perches are very useful since they help to wear the nails and beaks of the birds so that they do not get overgrown.

Although birds need various sizes of perches each size of bird species has recommended sizes. For small species the recommendation is three-eighths of an inch to three-quarters of an inch. Medium species should get five-eighths of an inch to one and a quarter inch. Then of course large species need between one to two inches.
