Petly: Petly is our new pet portal combined with reminder system. Petly is a pet portal page that will allow you to access your pets’ health information, request medication and food refills, receive notes and lab work from the doctor, request appointments, and leave feedback. Using the pet portal, you can also tell us how you’d like to receive reminders, email, text, or mail. As long as we have a good email address, you can sign up for your pet’s portal as well as receive email reminders. Having a current email address is crucial. We are trying to use less paper and want to make sure you have the easiest way to contact us. If you haven’t signed up, just go to www.petly.com. Click the box trouble signing in and you will be emailed a link to set up a password.
Specialists: Many of you don’t know that we have many specialists that come to see us on a regular basis. Besides the fact that Dr. Horn is specialized in rehabilitation therapy, we also have surgical specialists, radiologist, endoscopy, and a cardiologist available to help care for your pet’s needs.
Insurance: With escalating costs you might want to consider pet insurance. While there are many companies out there, we recommend Trupanion. They can start insurance on pets up to 14 years of age with coverage of 90% of the cost (except exams, vaccines, dental cleaning, flea control, etc. They have no age limit or pay out limits. You choose the deductible. We recommend Trupanion based on feedback from our clients. For information go to www.trupanion.com. They do offer a 1 month complimentary policy which can have instant activation within 24 hours of an exam.
Fleas and Other Parasites: With the heat and travel season upon us, please make sure your pets are on monthly effective flea control. We feel that oral flea control is superior and recommend Comfortis/Trifexis. In these products the flea control is the same, but Trifexis also controls heartworm, whipworm ,roundworm, and hookworm. There is currently a manufacturer rebate going on. For dogs that don’t tolerate these products, we recommend oral Nexgard. It kills fleas and ticks. We currently have a special for complimentary Heartguard (6 months) for every 6 month supply of Nexgard purchased. If you are using Trifexis and need tick protection, we can also use a Tick collar called Scalibur or switch to Nexgard. Remember it’s easier to prevent and outbreak of parasites than treat it once established. For our feline patients we like Revolution (all common parasites) or Comfortis (flea only).
Heat is On: Very soon the temperatures will climb. Please make sure to keep them out of the car without air conditioning, protect their feet from hot cement, prevent running around the pool, and prevent overheating by exercising during cooler hours. Every year we see a dog come in due to hyperthermia and it can be fatal!
Pet Memorial: Don’t forget that we have a pet memorial page on our website and you can submit pictures and stories of beloved lost friends. That way a part of them will always be with us. http://www.ocvetmedcenter.com/pet_memorial.html
Foundation: We are still in IRS limbo, but hoping that we will have an agent assigned to us soon and it will be a smooth process from there. Our foundation will help support lost/stray pets, rescue groups, people with financial needs that need assistance with veterinary care, and assisting in overall fostering pet welfare. Once we have our approval we can really start helping.
We always welcome your questions, comments, and reviews. The best compliment you can pay us is by referring a friend. We greatly appreciate that you entrust us to care for your pet.
Thank you fro Dr. Horn, Dr. Murphy, Dr. Cooper, and the rest of the OC Veterinary Medical Center team.
