Is keeping your dog in a kennel a bad idea?

Orange County dog owners are often faced with the dilemma of how to manage their dogs when they are not there to supervise. There are outdoor fenced kennels, crates, and indoor play yard. The size of the dog, their age, weather conditions, and more all affect this type of decision.

It is important to note that regardless of which type of kennel you select that animals should not be left in them 24/7. It is supposed to be used only when necessary. When misused it can cause emotional and physical harm to the dog.

The size of your dog should determine the size of the kennel or crate that you get. For large dogs crates can be a problem as they can cause arthritis since they are not big enough for the dog to move around. An indoor play yard could give them the space they need if you get one big enough.

An outdoor fenced kennel is good for large and small dogs alike. It also removes the problem of them urinating or defecating on your floors. They do need to be cleaned out frequently though to prevent worms, ants, and infections.

Crates are ideal for small dogs or puppies. They can be used as a sleeping area, a training tool, or to carry them in vehicles safely.

If you have any questions about what size area your dog needs so that you can get the proper kennel or crate for them, talk to your veterinarian or other professional.
