The Heat is On

August has really hit us hard, with massive heat and humidity. With the heat, we need to take extra care of our pets

1) A good rule of thumb is that if you are comfortable, your pet is too.

2) Hot cars are a crime. Literally. In this heat, your car can be deadly in minutes. Plan your day accordingly so you don’t have to leave your pet in the car.

3) Dark surfaces absorb heat more than light. Dark aspault can burn your pet’s pads. If you need to walk your pet during the day, consider booties. My personal favorites are available at www.walkaboutharnesses.com.

4) Daytime exercise can lead to heat exhaustion for both you and your pet. Keep it cool, by exercising after sundown and very early in the am.

5) Certain dog breeds, such as English Bull Dogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, French Bull Dogs, etc with short muzzles are at much higher risk of heat exhaustion and respiratory distress. In many cases, overheating will occur with minimal exercise or simply being outdoors in the daytime. If your dog tends to have noisy breathing, then they are at risk. For many of these dogs, corrective surgery can be lifesaving.

6) Fire is a threat if you live in the hills. The fire department has stickers to put on your window telling how many pets you have and our phone number in case rescue is needed and you aren’t home. If there is an evacuation, have a plan. We can house your pets if needed (we are also on the list of centers for animals to be brought to in case of evacuation).

7) Hydration is crucial for you and your pet. Have plenty of water available at home and on a walk (even when cooler outside). This is especially important for pets that have problems staying hydrated, like kidney disease, diabetes, and Cushing’s Disease.

Enjoy the Summer, be safe, and stay cool
