Although cleaning dog ears may not seem like a big deal to many Orange County dog owners it is an important aspect to dog care. Clean ears can prevent some health problems in dogs. It is important to know how to clean them, and how often.
Start by handling the ears while petting your dog. Lift the ears up for a few seconds and then give them a treat for letting you do so. Also rub inside the ear so that they will get used to the sensation.
Check for infections, dirt, and wax every week. If their ears are sensitive, have inflammation, a foul odor, or discharge your dog may have an infection and will need to be seen as soon as possible.
If there is no infection then you can clean with a dog ear wash. Pour a copious amount of cleaner in the ear and massage for about 30 seconds. After your dog shakes their head wipe out the visible area with tissue or cotton ball. Repeat with the other ear.
If your dog has long floppy ears then you should clean their ears every week. If they have short pointy ears then once a month will be often enough if they are healthy and have no trash in them.
For any questions regarding ear care talk to your veterinarian. They may be able to recommend the best ear care products, and help you with any concerns.
