Counters are not cat perches

Almost everyone has trouble with their feline friend going on the counter, even here in Orange County. Before you can get them to abdicate their throne it is important to recognize why they are attracted to these areas. Is it just because they like heights? Is there a window with the counter running in front? Is there food or other kitty delights on the surface? Is it warm, padded, or the purr-fect perch for pouncing? If the answer to any of these questions is yes then it is important to remove these extra perks as much as possible before you can get started on teaching them to stay off. Going over the situation with your vet might could help you find the problem areas.

After you have removed the extra temptations it is important to offer alternatives. For instance, if they like looking out the window try moving the object of their attention to a more appropriate viewpoint. Putting their multilevel posts in front of windows with a view of their focal point will make this even better. If they are going after the leftovers then try putting this in their food dish.  Putting multilevel scratching posts with various hidey holes in different rooms throughout the house will definitely help you get them off those other surfaces a lot easier.

Since cats are habitual animals it will take time to teach them to form new habits. If you remove the bad temptations, reward the good behaviors, and be patient as you take them out of their desired perches and show them to more acceptable seats. Try talking to your veterinarian to find more ideas on how to train your precious kitty cat.

Whatever you do make sure you choose the method that is right for your cat. Some cats are more nervous or skittish, more persistent, and teaching them might prove difficult. If that is the case it may be necessary to manage the problem by just removing them from the surface when they are in your way, and moving things you don’t want them getting into out of their reach.
