Dental disease is the second most common disease we see in pets (obesity is #1) and the most common cause of chronic pain. Infection of the teeth and gums can lead to severe systemic disease as well. Because pets hide pain as an instinct, by the time you may notice symptoms such as not eating, halitosis (bad breath), or dropping food, the problem may be extremely severe. Our goal is to provide earlier intervention so your pet will live a pain free life. We advise a combination of anesthetic or non-anesthetic dental cleaning and evaluation followed by a home management plan. During our evaluation we can not only fix existing problems but also work on preventing future ones as well. Think of your pets teeth like your own. Regular dental visits are extremely important, but also important is daily home care. We can work together to come up with treatment strategies specific to your pet. While we know that anesthesia is a big concern for many of you, know that we combine the safest anesthetic drugs, extensive monitoring, and aggressive pain management (which reduces the amount of anesthesia needed) in order to minimize risk. We treat all of your pets like we would our own. When we perform anesthetic dentistry we: use local anesthetics to numb the mouth, take full mouth photos, digital dental radiographs, ultrasonic scaling, polishing, complete oral exam, periodontal probing, and perform and necessary work such as deep periodontal therapy and extractions as needed. All patients are on IV fluids and we send home pain medication for all patients.
Please call us to schedule an appointment to have your pet’s teeth evaluated, or if we have already recommended dental care, please call us to schedule an appointment.
