Why giving pets for free is bad

Regardless of whether or not you are in Orange County it is important to know the facts about giving your pets away. There is so much danger in handing a pet over to the unknown, but even more so when you do so for free.

No one is foolish enough to think that there are no good reasons to let go of their pets. Finances change, people move, or household members are added or leave unexpectedly. Whatever the reason it is important to go about giving your pet to a new home in a responsible manner.

If you elect not to take your pet to a shelter for rehoming then you should be sure to charge a rehoming fee to the prospective home. It doesn’t have to be overly expensive, just not free. Just $25 or so to ensure that they go to a loving home that can take care of them.

Be sure to ask some questions such as:

• Do you have a veterinarian? If so, can I have their number as a reference.

• Do you have a yard? Is it fenced in?

• Will the pet ever be left alone?

• Do you have any other pets in the home?

If the answers are unsatisfactory then move on to another prospective family. The point is to pick a good home for the pet, and not just hand them off to the first person that comes along.

Giving a pet for free should never be an option. People see the word free and automatically want whatever is free even if they cannot afford to care for it properly.

If you have questions about the best way to give your Orange County pet to a good home consult a veterinarian. They can give you questions to ask, and things to look for in prospective families.
