Protect your dame in heat

Whether your dog is in Orange County or elsewhere in the world they still go through a cycle approximately every six months. It is important to know the signs of a dog in heat, and how to manage the situation.

The primary and most recommended solution to this problem is to spay your dog. It is recommended that you do this as soon as possible as it can prevent so many health issues for your dame.

If you elect not to spay your dame then you should watch carefully for signs of heat. She will urinate more often, her vaginal area will swell, there may be discharge, and her behavior will change.

If you notice these signs then it is imperative that you keep her away from male dogs to prevent unwanted pregnancy. You can do this by keeping her inside with the windows closed, not allowing unsupervised walks, and putting doggy pants or diapers on until the heat passes.

Heats generally last about three weeks depending on the breed. It is important to give your dame plenty of attention during this time to distract them. If you have any questions about the heat cycle, or what you can do about preventing unwanted pregnancy talk with your veterinarian.
