Put those claws away cat.

Orange County cats are just as bad about biting and scratching their owners as every other cat in the world. This is normal behavior for them. They scratch and bite in response to fear, to play, or to communicate dissatisfaction. Without a doubt this frustrates many owners and they are curious about what can be done about this.

Start by teaching them to enjoy being handled. It is best to start this when they are at their most relaxed. Scratch behind their ears, and don’t forget to stroke the top of their head. After a few moments move to stroke more of their body. If your kitty decides to allow a belly rub they will roll onto their side or back.

Do not forget to give them lots of praise while petting them. Treats can be effective especially when handling their most sensitive areas such as the mouth, paws, ears, and their tail.

Play time may prove a little more difficult. Keep play times at 15 minutes about three times a day.

Make the games interesting for them so that they can practice their hunting skills. Drag their toys around with strings. This will allow them to stalk and attack their toys rather than you.

If they get too hyped up then calm the session down. If they bite or scratch holler ouch, and stop playing with them. They will learn soon enough that they lose something enjoyable when they are too rough.

Regardless of how you decide to go about training your cat remember that it will take time and patience. Don’t forget to take your precious cat for regular wellness checks with their veterinarian!
