It’s recall update time. Here are a few of note.
July 27th, Catswell Brand Vitakitty Chicken Breast with Flaxseed and Vitamins were recalled due to elevated propylene glycol, which can cause anemia. These are made locally in Los Angeles.

For those interested in the Diamond recall in May, here is the reason why the recall occurred. This is posted on the FDA website

And apparently, people got sick. Human illness from handling pet foods happens…fairly commonly. This is one huge reason I’m against raw diets. The other is that pets can start shedding these bacteria in their poop. Just not safe for pet owners.

And as far as chicken jerky….
many pet owners have reported illness in Chicken Jerky for dogs of many brands. All were made in China. Thus far, the FDA has not determined a cause, nor any known pathogens or toxins in the jerky. Manufacturers claim the jerky is safe.
My opinion is that there are many “safer” alternative treats, most made here in the United States. I recommend against chicken jerky treats made in China. If manufacturers want my confidence to recommend chicken jerky treats for patients, then they can be made here in the United States with more rigorous standards. While there is absolutely no scientific evidence of problems, nor have I personally seen an issue, I prefer minimizing risk. Please read the report for more information (report is from November.)
