While it certainly does not feel like autumn, it’s here. School has started and Halloween is almost upon us. We’d like to update you on a few important items here at the OC Veterinary Medical Center.
Heartworm Disease: We’ve diagnosed a case of heartworm disease in one of our patients. She is twelve years old and is a local resident with no travel history. While cases are fortunately rare, they can be quite devastating. Prevention is over 95% effective if given year-round. Prevention also can include intestinal worm control (very important) and flea control as well. Treatment of infected dogs can cost over $1500 take over 3 months to complete, and can have severe complications. If untreated, heartworm disease is fatal. Please make sure that your pet is protected. For more information, go to http://www.heartwormsociety.org.
Halloween Candy: Halloween candy is not for the dogs! Ingestion of candy can cause serious health consequences. Ingestion of dark chocolates, even in small amounts, can be fatal. Certain gums contain xylitol which is extremely dangerous. Wrappers can cause intestinal blockage. Please make sure to keep all candy safely put away in a pet-proofed cabinet. If your pet does manage to get into candy, please call us right away.
Pets for Adoption: We have a young pitbull mix, Shirley that still needs a home. She needs a special loving home with no other pets. She has a lot of energy and would love an active owner. Baby Monster, our grey feline greeter can also be adopted. While she seems cranky, she is actually quite loving once she gets to know you. If you are interested in either of them, please let us know. Forest (who likes to hang out in the office with Dr. Horn’s dog, Daisy) and Lucky are not up for adoption, as they are our permanent residents.
