Run, Rodents, Run!

It would seem that your little rodentia friend doesn’t need all that much, but the fact is that they need just as much exercise as you yourself do. Like the rest of the world’s pet rodentia owners Orange County rodentia owners need to be aware of all the options available to them. One way to find out about these options is to talk to your veterinarian so that they can tell you what would work best for your pet rodent.

One of the most obvious ways for your little rat or mouse friend to stay fit is to put an exercise wheel in their cage. Of course, if they are a regular Speedy Gonzales then you might want to get them an exercise ball so that they can roam about the house freely. Some other toys your furry friend may enjoy are egg cartons, and paper towel tubes. Having lots of climbing activities in their cage would be a good idea as well. Little ladders and platforms of different heights in a spacious cage is loads of fun for them.

If you have a guinea pig you might find that they don’t enjoy playing on the wheel. This is because cannot use it very well. Instead try getting them a ball to roll around in. Another idea is putting them in a playpen so that they can have a larger area to roam around in. If you are worried they will escape and get lost then try a run. That way they can have their space, but are unable to get loose.

When choosing a wheel make sure that you get the right material, and the right type. Try getting wheels without rungs or cross bars since this is dangerous for your little friend. Mesh wheels are okay, and they are simple to keep clean. Just make sure that the mesh wheel has no cross bars. The wheel material should be heavy plastic or metal. The flimsier plastic wheel may be less expensive, but are more harmful to your beloved rodent in the long run.

Whether you are in Orange County, or somewhere else make sure your pets are getting the exercise that they need. If you have any questions about how to get your pet the proper exercise just ask your veterinarian.
