Sneezy dogs

Dogs in Orange County and around the world sneeze. It is usually quite normal, but that is if it is a sneeze here or there. If the sneezing is repetitive, and is accompanied by other symptoms it is possible that there is a more serious illness.

If you are concerned that there may be a serious problem, there are some things that you can look for. Start with a bowl of water, and if that doesn’t work look at their eyes and face. If the water doesn’t dislodge the issue, and there seems to be some concerning gunk or goo in their nose or eyes it is time to see if they are having problems breathing.

If you have trouble interpreting the signs in their eyes, nose, or breathing there are some questions that you can ask to help you make a more informed decision.

Does the dog have allergies? If so, this could explain the sneezing. Especially if they have seasonal allergies. Some allergy medication could help with this.

Have they spent time outside without supervision? If they sniffed a new plant or some other substance it could be causing an issue.

Is there any swelling in the face? This could be caused by blunt force trauma or insect bites and stings. If you believe there was some trauma take them to the veterinarian right away.

Are there signs of infection? Green or yellow discharge could indicate a serious problem.

Is their nose bleeding? Blood could mean there is a serious problem and the dog should be seen to as soon as possible.
Is their breathing labored or uneven? This could just mean that there is some inflammation. Antihistamines will likely take care of this problem.

If in any of these cases the symptoms get worse, or there is blood, signs of infection, or swelling then you should go to see a veterinarian immediately. They can prescribe some medication or treatments that will have your Orange County dog feeling better in no time at all.

Here’s hoping your dog is a little less sneezy, grumpy, sleepy, or dopey, and a lot more bashful or happy after seeing their doc!
