What is the best kind of litter to use?

With so many different types of cat litter available for Orange County cat owners it is difficult to know which one is best. A lot of this is dependent on what kind of litter you and your cat are looking for.

While there are cats that like the clumping type of litter there are others that would rather have the non-clumping. Some owners prefer the clumping because it is easier to clean, and still others are happier with non-clumping litter.

Most litter is designed to reduce dustiness, and smell. Litter can make animals sick if they eat it, but this depends on the type of litter as well as how much of it is eaten. The three basic types of litter are silica, clay, and biodegradable.

Clay is the type of litter that has been out there the longest. It can absorb urine, and provides some odor control. This type of litter needs to be changed frequently, and in its entirety. If it is bentonite clay then it will clump, and require less frequent changing.

Silica based litter is absorbent, and can control some odors. The silica produces less dust compared to clay litters, but can make the animals sick if they eat a good amount of the silica litter.

Biodegradable litter is a safer option for animal owners who worry about it making their fur babies sick. It is also a more ecologically friendly product. This litter is generally made with recycled materials, or plant derivatives such as pine, wheat, corn, and so on.
